| The battle against cancer is not an
easy one. One approach rely on a better diet. Most people these
days are trying to eat healthier but its tough to keep up with the
overload of diet-related information.
We all learn by seeing, hearing or doing. Some learn better by
seeing, some by hearing some by doing. For those who wish to learn
by hearing the following audio products are strongly recommended
for you..
There are some excellent audio products on the subject of
nutrition. Try popping one of these into your car stereo or
listening to them while you are in the kitchen making dinner. Its
a great way to learn more about the impact of food on your body.
It can also help you discover new foods and recipes that you might
not have been familiar with. And its a great way to stay
accountable to a healthier diet. Just try preparing a greasy
hamburger while listening to an audio book discussing the health
risks of saturated fats!
The South Beach Diet by Arthur Agatson is a great audio
product. The South Beach Diet is not as extreme as some other
diets so it is easy to take small simple steps to change into a
healthier way of eating. You will still be able to eat a lot of
the foods you enjoy but if you are like many others you will find
that the foods that you limit (e.g., refined carbohydrates) will
help you to lose weight quickly.
Another great source of information is the audio books from Dr.
Andrew Weil. Weil has written dozens of books on health and many
of them are available on audio. His dietary recommendations is
very sensible. Symbolically, he views food a source of pleasure, a
view consistent with most sociologists. A few recommended Weil
titles on audio are Eating Well for Optimum Health, The Healthy
Kitchen (with Rosie Daley) and Taking Care of Yourself.
You may also want to listen to Tony Robbins Living Health
course. While Tony's dietary recommendations are not the easiest
to follow, the alkalinity theory of nutrition that he espouses may
well be a breakthrough in the nutrition world.
A few other audio books that you may pick up include Diet for a
New America by John Robbins, Eat to Beat Cancer by J. Robert
Hatherill and Ultraprevention by Mark Hyman and Mark Liponis (the
co-directors of medicine at the Canyon Ranch spa). There are also
some interesting nutrition-related podcasts such as Tracy Jorgs
Vegan Cooking School podcast. Finally we have Eric Schlosser's
best-selling audio product Fast Food Nation. If you are looking
for some reasons to never eat fast food again you will find them
there.
Immerse yourself in a few of these titles and see how your diet
changes. Once you discover an enjoyable way to eat better don't be
surprised if you never go back to your old ways. Of course the
most important dietary principle here is to avoid dietary
carcinogens.
One way our diet may increase the risk of cancer is by dietary carcinogens.
1.Aflatoxin
Aflatoxin is a mycotoxin produced by fungi. Grains and nuts can be contaminated by fungus, which then produce chemicals called aflatoxins.
They are known to cause liver cancer in Africa and the Far East.
2.Benzopyrenes
Polycyclic hydrocarbons, such as benzopyrenes, are formed during barbecuing meat on an open fire (e.g. preparing jerked chicken). These polycyclic hydrocarbons are also one of the main constituents in cigarette smoke that cause lung cancer.
The traditionally high intake of fried and broiled food, such as meats, can increase the risk of breast, distal colon, prostate and pancreas cancers. Several studies showed that populations that eat fried or broiled meats have a greater
risk for colon and breast cancer.
More than 20 such chemicals have been identified. They are present in fairly small amounts,
usually acting as promoters for carcinogenesis.
3.Nitrosoamines
Food colorings are added to increase the appeal of the food but not all are good for us. An example is "butter yellow". Artificial sweeteners (like saccharine & cyclamates) and preservatives which produce nitrosamines are known to cause bladder and stomach cancers respectively.
4.Some substances are converted into carcinogens:
Nitrosamines are formed from sodium nitrite. Sodium nitrite is present in drinking water and vegetables.
