Endoscopic palliation of colorectal  tumours
by: DR SOON
Usually surgical resection is used to palliate colorectal tumours. However, some patients may have associated medical problems or may refuse surgery. Other techniques of intervention can be considered.

1. Laser.

Laser is usually used in left side tumours and rectal tumours. Nd: YAG laser is applied over several visits to the tumour with view to control bleeding or to relieve obstructions. Laser is slightly more effective in treating discharge and bleeding than obstruction. Complication include perforation.

2. Stenting

Stenting of colonic malignancy with self expanding metal stents is a developing field. These stents have been used in two clinical situations. First, it is used to relieve colonic obstruction prior to surgical resection. Secondly, it is used as a sole procedure for palliation in patients with inoperable cancer. However, until very recently, the role of stenting in colonic malignancy remains unclear.

The standard treatment is surgical resection.
